Fun Birthday

Celebrate your birthday!

Host a Craft Birthday Party
By Shannon L Weidemann

Have a craft or activity at a child’s birthday party is usually a necessary element to a successful party. You can easily plan a party around a craft theme for your daughter or son if they are a huge fan of arts and crafts. A craft birthday party will keep your guests entertained and send them home with some really great party memories that last.

As this is a craft party you will want to create your own handmade invitations. You can purchase blank cards and stencil them or use stamps. Another idea is tom embellish them with glitter and paint. Get your child involved in making the party invitations. Tell your guests to bring an art smock or old shirt because they may get messy at the party.

It is good to plan for three crafts for the party. That will give your guests time to complete everything, have some food and birthday cake, and a small amount of downtime. Give each craft its own space on an individual table. That way you can have a small group of guests working at each craft at a time, rather than all the guests working on the same craft at once. It is a good idea to have an adult at each table to demonstrate the craft and help out. Make sure you cover the table and surrounding area with a plastic drop cloth to contain any mess.

Here are a couple of ideas for the craft activities: paint a bird house, clay pot, or treasure box. Make a foam door hanger, wall sign, or locker decoration. Stamp or paint a pillowcase or t-shirt. Use clay or moldable dough to create a candle holder, object d’art, or vase

The craft portion of the party can also apply to the food. Have a bake your own bagel pizza station with a variety of toppings to choose from. For dessert let them decorate their own cupcakes or sugar cookies.

Your guests will love taking home their creations. Have a labeled bag for them to take the crafts home in.

Mexican Fiesta
At number five is the Mexican Fiesta theme. This can be a really fun and colorful party with the right music, decorations and food. For decorations you will want to keep in mind the Mexican flag colors: red, blue and green. You can decorate with sombreros, maracas, dried chili peppers, table cloths in bright colors, small white Christmas lights strung about, ponchos, cactus, and any Mexican posters you can get your hands on. A creative idea for a game would have your guests involved in a timed nachos eating contest. Line up the contestants and load up the plates with nachos chips, and all of the fixings! Tie the contestant’s hands behind their backs and have them dig in! A self serve taco bar is a fun idea for food. Your guests can create their own concoction if the nacho eating contest didn’t fill them up!

Mardi Gras
At number 4 in popularity for 50th birthday ideas is a Mardi Gras party complete with beads, masks and Cajun food and decorations. Mardi Gras colors are blue, green and purple-use these colors in your decorating theme. Decorate with beads, pictures of New Orleans, jazz players, gold chocolate doubloons. Shrimp, crawfish and anything with Cajun spice make great food ideas. Be sure to offer up “hurricane” cocktails for a real authentic flavor. Mardi Gras wouldn’t be Mardi Gras without lots of different beads. You can organize games fashioned around winning or using beads. Invite your guests to bring Mardi Gras masks and have a game involving the masks.

Coming in at number three on our list might seem a surprise, but it is becoming more and more popular. An Around the World Beer Party can be very fun and creative if you’re 50 year old is a connoisseur of beer. Obviously this party will involve varieties of beers from around the world-so you will have to find a good store that specializes in this area to help you with your selections. You can decorate in an international theme with flags from different countries. The store you buy the beer from may have samples of posters, coasters or even the cases the beer comes in to be used as decorations. Always fun at this type of party will be a time for a beer tasting-just as one might do at a wine tasting. Present some of the background and information on each beer so your guests will have fun tasting and learning at the same time. Food of the appetizer type would lend itself well for this type of 50th birthday party.

Luau Party
A tropical or Hawaiian Luau style themed party is extremely popular. People usually have tropical clothing so it is fun to dress the part for this theme. Keep the tropical theme in mind for decorations with tiki torches, shells, palm trees, lots of leis, surf boards, coconuts, pineapples, grass skirts, hula dancers, and citronella candles to ward off the bugs if outside. Pina coladas and mai tais make great drinks and if possible roasted pork for the meal. A tropical fruit salad with pineapple, mango, papaya served in a hollowed out watermelon works well and haupia, a traditional coconut pudding, for a desert idea. Games involving the limbo and hula hoops are fun for any age even at 50, especially if accompanied with music by Don Ho.

Casino Party
At number one for 50th birthday ideas, in terms of popularity today, is the Casino party theme. This is where you turn your house into an exciting casino for the evening. For this party you will want to decorate as much as possible so that you resemble a casino. Lots of bright and colored lights, music by Las Vegas headliners playing in the background, take different size boxes and paint to look like dice and place around the room, decorate with playing cards strung out or on tables. This is a theme where you will probably be best served by calling a company that rents the gaming tables. You can just rent the tables or many companies also include the people to run the tables. Blackjack, craps and roulette are very popular games at these types of parties. You can also have a table for poker playing Texas Hold-em. Have a no limit game that is timed, last for 30-45 minutes so everything moves fast. For those guests not into gaming, karaoke can be a lot of fun. A buffet with lots of varieties of salads and finger foods work well-just like a traditional Las Vegas buffet. A martini bar would be perfect for this theme. At the end of the evening you can auction off prizes with the money your guests have won.

5 Tips For Planning a Birthday Party on a Small Budget
By Shannon L Weidemann

It seems like everyone is cutting costs these days and trying to stick to a budget. When your child’s birthday is involved though, it can be tempting to chuck the budget out the window in order to give them the party of their dreams. Planning a low cost birthday party that is not only possible though, chances are your child and their guests will probably not notice. Here are 5 tips for planning a birthday party on a small budget.

1) Make a Budget. Sounds easy enough to do but you have to sit down and know how much money you can comfortably spend on the party. If you really plan ahead, you may be able to tuck away some extra money each month leading up to the party in order to make the least impact on your overall budget. Once you decide on how much money you can spend than it is really important to stick to it.

2) Bake a Cake. Purchasing a cake from a bakery can cost around a $1 person or even more for a specialty cake. Making your own cake can cost pennies per serving from scratch and a few cents more by using a cake mix. Frost it and then decorate with a specialty tip to write Happy Birthday on the top.

3) Time the party between lunch and dinner. Having to serve a meal at a birthday party can get quite expensive. Hosting the party during this time means you only have to serve cake, ice cream, and snacks.

4) Use Plain Colored Plates. Most children love to have a theme for their birthday party. Let them choose the theme and purchase the invitations, centerpiece, and Mylar balloon that match it. Then find some plain colored plates, napkins, and cups that match a color from the themed items. You can save around 30 cents a plate by not going with the themed ones.

5) Cut back on Party. It is traditional to send your party guests home with a party favor as a thank you gift. It can be quite easy to spend several dollars or more per child though. Use a simple brown paper lunch bag to put your party favors in. Fill them with stickers and candy purchased in bulk. Close with a ribbon that matches the theme if you wish to dress the bag up a bit.

Unique Cupcake Ideas For Your Next Birthday Party
By Sarita Haines

Cupcakes can be more than just a sumptuous treat at your next birthday party or bridal shower. This much-loved dessert can also be a main attraction of the party. Try these tips to take your birthday cupcakes to a show-stopping next level.

Cupcakes Big and Small

Did you know you can make other sizes apart from your standard cup-sized cupcake? Now cupcake molds are available in bite-sized up to giant versions that will double as a full, shareable cake. It’s not much extra work to pour your cupcake batter into several different-sized molds. The visual effect of a giant cupcake centerpiece surrounded by rows of gradually smaller cupcakes is both mouth-watering and photogenic. Have fun with it!

Table Decor

A multi-tiered plate full of beautifully decorated cupcakes makes an attention-grabbing centerpiece for a table or buffet. They can also be part of seating arrangements by setting a food-friendly placecard stand in the cupcake in front of each place setting. Just try to keep the guests away until dessert!

New Ideas For Frosting and Garnishing

Think about decorating ideas you’ve seen for big cakes and make them small. For example, each cupcake can have a photographic transfer image on the frosting, similar to what you may have seen in sheetcakes. Select a variety of funny images of the birthday celebrant to decorate the cupcakes.

Also consider a wider variety of frosting garnishes such as gumballs, lollipops, m&m’s, munchkins, pretzels or popcorn to top each cupcake. These add unique flavors and can be inspired by the birthday girl or boy’s favorite foods. For another unique presentation, place the cupcake frosted on the top and sides in a small ice cream cone. Voila, a cupcake cone! Or, place one letter on each cupcake so that when you present them on a tray, they are arranged to spell “Happy Birthday.”

Remember to color coordinate cupcakes with your other decorations for a stunning display. Also be sure to have a supply of festive party bags or boxes for your guests to take a cupcake home as a party favor. Use these tips to make cupcakes a memorable part of your special day.

Birthday Prospecting and Your Business - How Entrepreneurs Are Turning Birthdays Into Big Business
By Julie Escobar

With more than ten billion dollars in annual birthday market revenue to capture, marketing conscious restaurant management teams are making birthdays a timely treat for local consumers and a huge new profit center for their establishments. Why? Statistics shared by the National Restaurant Association® tell us that seven out of ten adult consumers dine out on their special day. Even in today’s budget-focused economy, birthdays still rank up there first for eating out, followed by Mother’s Day and Valentine’s.

So, how are savvy business owners connecting, attracting and keeping these valuable customers? They deploy a powerful combination of data, relationship and direct response marketing. “Targeted and timely are the key components our customers rely on for successful marketing campaigns,” shared Jim Schimpf, Executive Director for Opportunity Knocks Direct Mail Solutions. “There’s simply no budget in today’s economy for ‘buckshot marketing.’ Precision data, delivery and direct offers are no longer should-haves, they’re must haves. Relevance delivers response, and there’s nothing more relevant than a personalized birthday offer on someone’s birthday! So much so, that we’re quantifiably tracking an 11.2% response rate for some of our birthday mailing customers.”

Donna Anderson, Owner of Hospitality Resource Solutions, a Florida based restaurant training organization, says, “There really is a ‘perfect storm’ out there right now in the minds and buying habits of today’s consumers. Their expectations are at an all-time high and their tolerance for less is at an all time low. It’s not just about price points and portioning any more. Everyone is in that game. To compete for both the NOW business and long-term, repeat customer loyalty, restaurant managers and staff have got to truly step up their game in terms of service and smart marketing.”

Let’s take a look at the winning elements that top restaurants and clubs are using across the nation:

Precision data: While not a new strategy; database marketing is the turn-to choice for entrepreneurs eager to get the most from their marketing dollars. Data specialists repeatedly tout the importance of successfully matching your message to your market segment by drilling down using geographic and demographic factors such as age, birth date, income bracket, proximity, etc. to dramatically increase your response rate. For example, the National Restaurant Association statistics show that the average consumer chooses a restaurant within 3.0-3.7 miles of their home. Another study showed that consumers with a household income of $35,000 or more, those with two-member or dual-income households and college students were more likely to eat out on their birthdays and that three out of ten married respondents were likely to eat out on their spouse’s birthday.

Smart restaurateurs are now leveraging that type of valuable demographic information to plug into powerful systems like Opportunity Knocks and take a more “laser-beam” approach to how they spend their marketing dollars. “Having an extensive consumer database certainly gives our customers a competitive edge,” shared Mr. Schimpf. “We can drill down their ‘hit-list’ of best customer prospects by age, miles from their business, household income and of course, allow them to pinpoint anyone with an upcoming birthday! This way, they’re not spending precious dollars marketing to unlikely customer candidates — only those with the highest potential to frequent their restaurant.”

Relationship Building: While we are on the topic of how to most wisely spend your marketing money, consider nationwide statistics which indicate that return customers spend, on average, 33% more than new customers and are more than 100% likely to provide valuable referrals than non-customers. Add to that the fact that sales and marketing experts tell us that it takes roughly $10 in “new customer business” to replace every $1 of lost business and you have pretty good incentives for treating your customer base like the VIPs they truly are.

How do you effectively build relationships? Start by building trust through consistent, high-quality service, regular recognition and genuine appreciation. Here are a few ideas on how to start (or keep) building that trust:

  1. “Touch” your customer base monthly. This creates a “top-of-mind” awareness that breeds familiarity and comfort. Remember the wise words or internationally known businesswoman and entrepreneur Elizabeth Arden, “Repetition makes reputation and reputation makes customers.”
  2. Get everyone in on the action. In a restaurant, make sure EVERYONE is aware of the vital importance of customer service. There is something each individual can add to a customer’s positive experience. Employees in a high percentage of businesses feel their opinions are undervalued or not even considered. Change that trend in your organization and you’ll empower your staff with ownership of ideas and watch proudly as they step up to the plate. “Motivate them, train them, care about them and make winners out of them,” said hotel icon J. W. Marriott, Jr. “We know that if we treat our employees correctly, they’ll treat the customer’s right. And if customers are treated right, they’ll come back.”
  3. Ask and listen. Ask your best patron what they’d like to see by way of special offers, new items, or service. Then listen to what they’ve shared and implement their best suggestions. Be sure to follow that up with a thank you note to each.
  4. Under-promise and over-deliver. Nothing can sour a relationship quite so much as a failure to deliver on a promise. If you can’t deliver lunch within twenty minutes for example or the lowest priced steak in town, don’t say it.
  5. Commitment. Building business relationships are much like maintaining friendships or life partners. They take work and commitment. Go the extra mile every day.

Direct Response Marketing: “Build it and they will come.” “Ask and ye shall receive.” Both are good illustrations of how success truly does require ACTION. You have to invite customers to do business with you. Building your brand and your long term business depends on it. “Sophisticated brand managers are now using direct response to accomplish so much more than generating sales transactions,” shared Jim Warren, owner of Infomercial.com. “They employ a direct-to-brand approach to create or enhance a brand, enhance a company’s image, drive sales, and generate leads, just to name a few - all with the goal of developing long-term customer relationships, not merely single transactions.”

Successful direct response marketing is comprised of these five components:

  • Personalization (one-to-one marketing variables)
  • The Offer
  • The USP (Unique Selling Proposition)
  • The Call to Action
  • The Hook

Done right, birthday marketing offers a unique and historically effective way to wrap all of these key ingredients up in a tidy birthday bow. “High personalization coupled with an irresistible offer such as free meal, bottle of wine, dessert, etc. are really what drive those double-digit response rates,” added Mr. Schimpf. “The real beauty of birthday marketing is that people rarely celebrate alone. So if you received just a 10% response from a mailing of 500 personalized postcards that would mean 50 new parties for your restaurant. Consider the average party ranges from 4-8 even in today’s market, and you’ve got a new marketing focus that just makes good sense.”

In a challenging economy, tapping smart, outside-the-box systems and solutions can be a gift you give yourself as a restaurant owner. Any time you can generate new business, make customers feel appreciated and special and increase word-of-mouth referrals, you’ve got a winning combination. Start today to look at the elements outlined here to discover how and why birthday marketing may be just the boost your establishment has been looking for!

Birthday invitations have to be innovative and fun, especially when it comes to kids birthday invitations. You can easily find a wide range of ideas for a kid’s birthday invitations online, such as designs, colors and themes. Many websites features printable invitations or online greeting cards that you can browse. You can choose one of those pre-made cards that are available at your convenience.

Kids love receiving online greeting cards for any occasion, and fortunately, you will find that there are many of them available out there. These colorful e-cards can make ideal kids birthday invitations and you can customize them with a personal message apart from the standard one that is already on them. These online invitations feature fun animations that look great and can also preview the theme of the party. If you are sending out your kids party invitations, you will have to keep in mind that they are not only meant for kids but also for adults.

These online invitations can either be free or paid. Most of the invitations come at a flat price and you can use them in the form of an email and send them to multiple recipients at the same time. This saves a lot of time, since you don’t have to individually postmark and send those invitations out. Also, there is no need to worry about delayed delivery, since your recipients will receive it instantly as long as you write the email address correctly. Just make sure that all your guests have an email and access to a computer with internet. Keep in mind, that some still believe in the kids birthday invitations since they can feel more personal and show more emotion than an email.

Printed kids birthday invitations can get pretty expensive at times, depending on the amount of colors and your chosen design. You can save yourself a lot of money by designing your kid’s birthday invitations on your own or with the help of your child! You then just print it out and you are done. Things to Do on Your 18th Birthday - My 5 Top Tips
By Victoria K Jones

If you’re looking for some of the best things to do on your 18th birthday then you’re in for a treat! I, unfortunately, am one of the unlucky ones who failed to plan their birthday which unfortunately led to a completely wasted 18th birthday that I would love to forget. However so you don’t go through the same experience I went through, I decided to do some in-depth research on the area and found some of the most effective things to do on your 18th birthday. I’m going to share with you my top 5 tips to ensure an unforgettable 18th birthday experience.

Remember, it’s the most important birthday of your teenage years and it only comes once in your life, so don’t make the same mistake I did. Make It Count! So lets get straight into my 5 Top Tips for your 18th Birthday.

Top Tip #1: Doing Something is better than doing Nothing!

Know this may come to a bit of a shock to some of you but doing anything on your birthday is better than doing nothing at all. I really can’t emphasis this enough. It is better to do something that you’re fairly fond of, like going cinema or bowling on your 18th, then be stuck at home watching that “re-run” of “pets do the funniest things”!

Top Tip #2: The Secret to clubbing

Depending on where you live this is the most popular thing to do on your 18th birthday. However there are some tips and tricks that I have picked up that will assure you that you 1. Get into a club 2. Get your friends into the club 3. Get in free!

Now this won’t work all the time but, from experience it does work some of the time and is worth at least trying. What you need to do is call every club that your thinking of going to and informing them that it is your birthday and you will be coming down with “X” amount of friends. Most of the club owners have certain provisions for birthdays including free entry or free tables or free birthday gifts as they know that a birthday means guest and guest mean money. The more inquiries the better results!

Top Tip #3: Why it’s Crucial to have a Plan B

Did you know that this is where most 18 year olds get it wrong? They go out and don’t have a backup plan! When plan A fails, this for most is where the party DIES. Don’t be one of them! Have a backup venue that you can go to if your initial plan doesn’t work. This can be anything from a restaurant to a cinema but just have one. It’s better to do something that you don’t really mind doing than nothing at all!

Top Tip #4: Themed Parties

This is my favourite. So you may not want to go out on your 18th birthday which means you can bring the party to you! Even if you rent out a hall this is the best idea to ensure a positive turnout and guarantee fun. A themed party can be anything from black and white dress code to your own personalized casino night filled with the red carpet and roulette tables as standard! It really depends on your budget and your imagination but this is by far the best way to ensure an unforgettable night in your control.

Top Tip #5: Why you should celebrate your 18th more than once!

This one is a peach! One of the main reasons that celebrating your 18th birthday can become a bit complex is that we try to cater our birthday plans around everyone: family, friends and partners. This is the BIGGEST MISTAKE you could make. It is so much better to celebrate Thursday night in a restaurant with the family, Friday night going to a cinema with your partner and Saturday night parting until dusk with friends. Obviously each category is flexible but remember the more people you try to please the less likely it is for you to be happy. Remember who’s 18th birthday it is!

Now the thing to remember here is your 18th birthday is a once in a lifetime event and you should really try your best to make it unforgettable, with any budget. I found out the hard way and would hate for you to suffer the same drag that I went through. So I have done the research and produced an ultimate guide on “Things to do on your 18th Birthday”, which explains fully the “Do’s and Dont’s” of your 18th birthday, including what the best places to go regardless of price. Check it out at: http://www.thingstodoonyour18thbirthday.net

People just think the gift can make a birthday special. However, you need to throw a surprise party and if it’s a milestone birthday then you must prepare toasts too. Toasts for 40th birthday should have following things:

1. Welcome speech for everyone and make sure that you are not missing out on anyone.

2. There can be lines such as that you are very happy to be here and if you are a very close friend or a family member then you must say that you are very happy to be here.

3. You should also thank to everyone responsible for organizing the party and you should also praise the food, decoration and arrangement.

4. You can also state the importance of 40th birthday and explain how lucky a person is to reach this milestone.

5. You should also talk about the celebrant and explain how humble and great he/she has been over 40 years of life. You can also talk about your relation with the celebrant and explain his/her importance in life.

6. You can also ask the celebrant to sing a song for everyone or crack a joke or tell any great moments about his life.

7. You should never be too much specific and only talk about the situations/people in vague and diplomatic manner. You should never point a finger to anyone.

If you keep these 7 points in mind, you can have good toasts for 40th birthday. You should also remember that you have to be confident and impressive while speaking.
