75th Birthday Baked Potato Bar for all the Spuds out There!
By Gail Leino

Build a buffet around a 75th birthday baked potato bar to incorporate foods that entice everyone on the guest list. A menu that includes soups, salad and baked potatoes can be a real crowd pleaser. Variety and options are the key elements of this easy yet opulent birthday menu.

Use large metal baking pans to prepare plenty of spuds a few hours early. There’s not much work involved. Just scrub and wrap large Idaho potatoes in aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour and one-half. Test for doneness before placing in warmers on the buffet table.

Use crock pots to keep a couple of varieties of soup hot. Usually a clear broth soup like onion, vegetable or minestrone can take one side of the selection. The other opposing soup should be a cream based one like cheese, chowder or broccoli. Any of these can be easily made from purchased crème soup base. Follow package directions and add favorite ingredients. Cooked bacon and potatoes with a little cheese to taste makes a wonderful and easy soup. Finely chopped raw broccoli tops take the crème soup base another direction. A simple chowder can be made from diced canned clams and onions sautéed in butter added to soup base. Add the liquid for additional flavor.

A large salad bowl full of salad base should be surrounded by raw vegetable choices. Placed somewhere between the spuds and the salad bowl should be a plate each of cooked julienne ham, chicken and steak slices. Other bowls of assorted julienne cheeses–say cheddar and Swiss–should also be placed for easy toppings to potatoes and salads.

Keep a separate area for the best item of all: desert. Use a themed 75th birthday paper table cloth and coordinated paper plates, napkins, and cups.

Yu-Gi-Oh! What a Birthday with Party Games!
By Gail Leino

Yu-Gi-Oh first aired in the US in 2001. In just a few short years, this Japanese cartoon has become a multi-million dollar franchise. Cartoons, movies, comic books, trading cards and of course merchandise is everywhere, it seems. For parents planning a birthday party, this is great news. Yu-Gi-Oh merchandise, including party supplies and birthday cakes are available anywhere in the country. However, what could parents do to keep the little Yugi fans entertained after the presents are opened and the cake is gone? Yu-Gi-Oh inspired party games can come to the rescue!

Find the Pharaoh
One of the central themes of Yu-Gi-Oh is the inability of the pharaoh, a spirit thousands of years old, to find his identity. Have your partygoers help him via a treasure hunt. Write clues on Yu-Gi-Oh cards and have teams of little ones set off to find the pharaoh’s identity (a parent is a great choice for this role). Depending on the age of your partygoers and the time available, you can tailor the complexity and number of clues as needed. Be sure to use old or unused Yu-Gi-Oh cards for this.

Capture the Star Chip
Yugi needs ten star chips to advance to the next round of a card dueling tournament. Divide the kids into two teams, one for Yugi and one for his nemesis Maximillion Pegasus. The game consists of two teams and two star chips. A large, glittery ball is a good choice for a star chip. In order to win the star chip, one team must steal it from the other and return it to their chosen base. If a player is tagged, they are out of that star chip round. If they are carrying the star chip at the time, it must be returned to base and the game restarts. If a team captures the opponents star chip, that counts as one star chip and the game resets. The first team to 10 wins. Alternately, each may start with 6, 7 or 8 star chips and the first team to have 10 star chips wins.

With an endless supply of merchandise, movies, comics and cards available, it seems Yu-Gi-Oh is everywhere. Why not make it the theme for a party? With these Yu-Gi-Oh themed party games, you’ll be sure to keep guests entertained for hours.

100th Birthday Facts and Celebration
By Gail Leino

In the past decade more and more of us are celebrating our 100th birthday’s with increasing amounts of glee. Many centenarians are not only alive, they are able bodied and eager to continue living their lives as they have been doing. The 100th birthday is considered something of a milestone marking wisdom and true life experience. As such we should celebrate the 100th birthday as much as possible. There is just something about those double zeros that makes friends and relatives want to come over and say congratulations.

You will find plenty in the way of party supplies for this celebration. Paper plates, napkins and tablecloths sporting the ever classic ‘Happy 100th’ are just the beginning. Sometimes your new centenarian will have a sense of humor about his or her age and you can set up a humorous party. Guests can give gag gifts such as adult diapers, and walking canes with rearview mirrors. The 100th birthday doesn’t have to apply to a person either.

It can, and is often the number used to celebrate the founding of a town or building. After all, the world’s largest birthday cake was created in 1989 for the 100th year celebration of the founding of a Fort Payne in Alabama. In any such case the celebration of the 100th birthday is bound to be a large event and you’ll need to make sure that you have plenty of room for all the guests. The party can be held outdoors if the weather is nice or in a larger hall. Most local Senior Centers will have plenty of room and you should find that those operating the centers are usually more than willing to offer up some space for such an important celebration. That is as long as you ask them politely and well in advance of the occasion so that they have time to mark it on their books.

Sweet Sixteen Birthday Invitations
By Aaralyn Ralston

How exciting it must be for you to be planning a sweet sixteen party?! This article is both important for you; the sweet 16 year old and your parents to read. There are many things to consider when purchasing invitations that you probably haven’t even thought of up until this point. Most likely the birthday girl is just concerned with what amazing outfit she will make her debut in and the parents only have one thing on their mind regarding the party; “how much is this event going to cost me”? I won’t take up much of your time but I will run down the list of important things to factor in when purchasing your invitations so that you come off being on top of things and with money leftover in your pocket.

Planning a sweet sixteen birthday party requires “grown-up” invitations. Long gone are the days of cute Crayola drawings and messy penmanship that your daughter concocted to her 7th birthday party. If you are like most parents that are planning a sweet sixteen party you are putting a couple of thousand dollars into this event . Now is not the time to cut costs by purchasing cheap Target bought invitations. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on your invitations either. You can purchase invitations online that will be personalized with all your sweet sixteen party details for about $1.00-$1.50 per invitation. That’s not bad considering all the work is down for you. Gone are the days of messy handwriting, hand cramping from sitting down to fill the invites out and you can pick out beautiful cards to coordinate with your theme!

Is etiquette the first thing you think of when purchasing invitations for your sweet sixteen party? Perhaps; but I am guessing probably not. Then you need to make sure that you follow some simple rules of etiquette when purchasing your invitations, wording them and mailing them out. The number one question I get when it comes to the actual invitation details is: “When do I need to mail out my invitations”? You are probably used to mailing out birthday invitations 2-4 weeks in advanced. Because you have spent so much time planning this special event, treat your invitations like wedding invitations. Mail out your invitations 6-8 weeks in advance and it’s a good idea to have a reply-by date to be about 2 weeks beforehand. If you are planning for a party that is going to be competing with prom season or other major holidays then this 6-8 week time line is crucial. In fact you may want to send out a “save the date” announcement 12 weeks in advance with your invitations following 8 weeks prior to.

The reply-by information should be the phone number of the main party coordinator although teens may feel more comfortable telling the birthday girl herself. It’s still suggested to include the primary contact phone number. If you are concerned about shy teens picking up the phone to RSVP, then list the primary contact’s phone number followed by the birthday girl’s phone number too.

Sweet Sixteen Birthday offers the most unique sweet sixteen theme ideas, planning guides, low-cost ideas and recommendations that make your sweet 16 birthday party top-notch.

Ideas for Celebrating your Teenager’s Birthday Parties
By Gail Leino

Your young adults will want their teenager birthday parties to be a little more fun and just plain cool than those parties they used to have as kids. On your part this may take either a little more ingenuity or a little more money. Hopefully you opt for more ingenuity.

A party theme that is becoming very popular is the glowsticks party. Glowsticks are small plastic tubes that emit a phosphorescent light when they are activated. Usually this light is neon and comes in colors like green, purple, blue, yellow, and red. Glowsticks don’t just come in tubes anymore either. You’ll find that there are necklaces, bracelets, pendants and even cup holders that light up your drink with an eerie glow. Due to this wide variety of glowsticks media available parties have sprung up that make heavy use of them. If you have a glowsticks party you’ll need to buy a lot of glowsticks. String the bracelets together and hang them like garlands, hand out glowsticks as party favors and keep the lights low or have the party in the backyard during the evening.

A Safari Party is perfect for costume parties. Have your teenager’s guests arrive dressed up in safari gear or as the animals on the safari. For party favors you can hand out one time use cameras and let the kids take photos of some of the unusual animals that show up at the Safari. You can also purchase lots of plastic safari hats or animal striped hats to hand out to the kids. Play animal sounds in the background and hang up lots of green and tan streamers.

Pool parties make great events for those teenagers who happen to have a birthday during the warmer months. You are certain to have a high turn out because everyone wants a chance to cool off. Water games can be entertaining but do be sure to keep an eye out and stop too many people from getting in the pool at once. Combine this with a BBQ party for some great eats.

Mickey Mouse and You: Creating the Perfect Birthday Wonderland
By Gail Leino

Winnie the Pooh and Donald Duck are all recognizable animated characters with their own star on the Hollywood Walk of fame, but Mickey Mouse is the only one to represent the symbol for The Walt Disney Company. A goal many children have is to meet the gloved mouse at a Disney theme park. You don’t have to travel to allow your children to experience the magic associated with Mickey Mouse. You can create magic at your own home for your child’s next birthday party.

An outdoor celebration on a beautiful sunny day is just right for a Mickey Mouse party. However, if the weather does not permit an outdoor celebration, this birthday party can still be a great success indoors. Decorations for a Mickey Mouse theme party should consist of lots of colorful balloons: red, yellow, and black are the colors that are associated with Mickey Mouse. Decorative plates, napkins, and cups are also recommended to adorn the festive occasion. Every child who arrives at the party should have their own set of Mickey Mouse ears to wear during the celebration and to keep as a memento.

Entertainment is a must at a Mickey Mouse birthday party. A good idea is to have several events going on simultaneously to give the children a choice. A rented bounce house (about $100 – $150) with a Mickey Mouse them can provide hours of bouncy fun whether the party is held inside or outside. A den or living room can easily turn into a mini movie theatre to show Mickey Mouse short films. Mickey’s first motion picture debut was as a sorcerer in the movie, “Fantasia.” A magic show is an event that children will also enjoy. At a designated time, all children should meet to sing “Happy Birthday” to the birthday boy or girl and to eat cake with Mickey Mouse decorations. A surprise visit from Mickey Mouse to hand out presents to everyone would top off the party just fine.
